Top 5 Tapas Bars in Granada

We've hand-picked Top 5 of the greatest, most interesting must-
visit tapas bars in Granada-with a plateful of free tapas with every drink, usually beggars can't be choosers...but here the beggar is king!  And it's one of our favourite things to do in Granada!

Here is what we recommend:

Taberna La Tana
A spot to appeal to both wine aficionados and foodies (it's run by a sommelier and his chef sister). La Tana is a very small, almost standing-room only classic bar with a great atmosphere: nice low lighting, interesting décor and wine bottles stacked to the ceiling. All the best tapas already come free with drinks but keep an eye out for the mouth-watering morcilla, pate and guacamole.
(We were so inspired by Tana's montaditos (the tapa that comes as a piece of bread with a meat or veggie topping) that we had to try our hand at making our own and sharing the recipe. Here it is, let us know if you make it: Taberna La Tana-inspired Montaditos)

Bar Los Diamantes

Definitely not one to miss due to the great fish on offer daily - fresh from Motril. There are 3 bars in el centro de Granada but it may be easier for tourists to handle the bigger one by Plaza Nueva as opposed to the smaller, more crowded ones on C/Navas & Rosario. Here you get an amazing selection of dishes free with your drinks such as almejas (clams), sautéed garlic mushrooms and boquerones (fried anchovies) and we'd recommend ordering the gambas pil pil and calamares frito on top!
(Los Diamantes is on our list of go-to bars at least 3 times a week so we had to try our hand at making some of the dishes at home in order not to go completely broke. Here's the recipe for their absolutely gorgeous, sizzling Gambas Pil Pil, a mouth-watering dish of shrimp, garlic and spice: Los Diamantes-inspired Gambas Pil Pil)

Bar La Trastienda
Tucked away in the back of what looks like a little meat shop (you literally walk behind the counter to enter the bar), lies a cosy, low-ceilinged bar serving up scrumptious sharing platters, not to mention the lovely wines and cocktails. You could spend all night here with a group of friends (if you get there in time to get seats) sampling the patés, quesos and embutidos (meats).

Café OMKA (Om Kalsoum)
This friendly Moroccan bar lets you choose the free tapa with your drink. Great if you have a veggie, vegan, gluten-free or otherwise selective eater in your midst as they can avoid the usual bready, meaty and dairy tapas. Tasty dishes like cous cous or falafel for the veggies and hamburguesa kebabs and albóndigas (meatballs) for the meat-eaters, you'll keep drinking just to taste more of their dishes.

La Pajuana
Just across from La Tana is a great option for a modern take on Granada tapas. It's a small bar so it gets quite crowded and has more of a stark, modern feel with bright lights but serve delicious sandwich-style tapas like pitas, quesadillas and wraps - it's a nice break from the very traditional style tapas elsewhere.

But when are five bars ever enough? Here are some more tapas bars with excellent accompaniment to your drinks:

The area around Plaza de la Universidad (good area for tapas or hanging out during siesta hours): Wandering around and looking for a delicious tapa or siesta-hours drink? Plaza de la Universidad is a handy spot to linger and especially at:
  • The Corner (for fill-your-belly tapas right in Plaza de la Universidad): Not usually open during siesta hours but worth the wait is The Corner for tapas like a whole baked potato with fillings, mini pizza, sandwich and more. You can also watch football or other sport matches here. Indoor and outdoor seating plus free wifi. We find we gravitate towards here when we don't have a set place in mind but hungry for tapas and a nice outdoor spot to watch the world go by.
  • Tocateja (low-lit wine bar for some of the most delicious tapas in town on Calle Trinidad): open later than many other spots and still serving tapas, this friendly wine bar has a cool, cosy atmosphere where you'll while away the hours without realising it.

Chikito
(a local favourite by Plaza del Campillo, stand at the bar or go through to the restaurant): You can tell these guys have been around for a long time and keeping hungry drinkers happy with traditional and hearty tapas. Choose a ración off their menu as well but I think you'll be fully satisfied with the generous tapas.

El Conde (Beside Tana and La Pajuana on Calle Virgen del Rosario): A trendy bar with a great wine selection (ask for a local wine recommendation, they're all tasty). Delicious, meticulously-prepared tapas by the talented chefs, you can lose hours here having drinks, tapas and chatting with the fun crowd.
