Top 5 'Other' Churches to Visit in Granada

We know you'll visit La Catedral de Granada - it's a given and one of the top things to do (we hope!). But there are some other magnificent, ornate chapels and churches in Granada centre which you can reach by easily walking from La Catedral around the centre of town.

Here is what we recommend:

Iglesia de San Gil y Santa Ana

This church beside Plaza Nueva draws interested visitors in with its impressive belltower and the history behind its construction, combining both Christian and Islamic aspects. Built on the site of a mosque (the belltower used to be the minaret), this church dates back to 1537. Free entry as well as active daily hours of worship, pop in to appreciate this beautiful church and its history.

Location: Plaza de Santa Ana, 1

Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Las Angustias

The unassuming exterior does not prepare you for the incredible baroque interior of the Basílica Angustias dating back to 1617. A must visit on your stroll around Granada, you can attend a service (or just pop in) to experience the peacefulness without the entry fee.
We couldn't say it better ourselves than this TripAdvisor comment:
"There are no words for this. If you have faith, it will move you to tears. If you do not, the opulence will render you speechless."
Location: Carrera de la Virgen, 42

Basílica de San Juan de Dios
History buffs, art critics and religious aficionados all will appreciate this beautiful church located about a 10min walk from La Catedral. Its impact is immense, the gold-leaf is plentiful and no bit of wall is left unadorned - it's one to gape at in awe.
Helpful guides here will help explain the history behind the church and its very interesting namesake.
Location: Calle San Juan de Dios, 15

Monasterio de San Jerónimo
Pair this visit with the Basilica de San Juan de Dios (above) as they are beside each other on the edge of the centre. For a small cash fee, you can enter the grounds to view the beautiful gardens, and then the incredible artwork, woodwork and decor of the monastery's chapel. It is still actively used as a convent so you may see nuns strolling quietly around the gardens and alcoves.
Location: Calle Rector López Argueta, 9

Iglesia de Santo Domingo
Set in the beautiful old Jewish neighbourhood of Realejo, another unassuming church belies the art museum-like altars and interior. Gain free entry during daily services to sit and witness the competing styles of Baroque, Gothic and late Renaissance dating back to its beginning in 1512. (Make sure to go all the way up to the altar as the alcoves are hiding impressive gold-leafed structures!)
Location: Plaza de Santo Domingo, 1
